This experimental study aimed to verify the effects of implementing the Reading and Enchantment – Forming Motivated and Competent Readers (LE Program) program on the reading skills of 5th-grade students in a public school in Porto Alegre (RS). The intervention group (n=18) received the program from the reference teacher, while the control group (n=16) received the normal curricular activities. The program consists of a selection of narrative texts and activities that contain the components of reading comprehension, with a clear emphasis on teaching fluency. Both groups were evaluated on their performance in word recognition, fluency, and reading comprehension before and after the intervention. Comparisons between groups in the post-test showed significant differences in two specific variables of reading fluency, while intra-group comparisons indicated a broader set of gains in the intervention group, highlighting the effectiveness of the LE Program in specific variables, even with possible limitations regarding the short duration of the intervention and the scenario of widespread learning gaps, aggravated by the post-pandemic context due to Covid-19.
