This article was produced in response to the need to deepen the discussion on the use of textbooks with children in Early Childhood Education. The aim of the article is to analyze pedagogical practices and teaching mediation guided by the textbook Adoletá and the Teacher’s Manual (Silva & Carla, 2020), selected in the National Textbook and Teaching Material Program (PNLD/2022), discussing how this resource influenced the practices developed with children. The research adopts a qualitative approach. The chosen setting was a Municipal Center for Early Childhood Education (Cemei) in Montes Claros/MG, and the participant is a teacher who works with five-year-old children at this institution. The procedures used were semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The results showed that both the teaching material used with children and the Teacher’s Manual are aligned with the National Literacy Policy (PNA), which proposes explicit and systematic teaching of grapheme-phoneme relationships, to the detriment of guidelines focused on interactions and experiences within the world of written culture in Early Childhood Education. The textbook presents structured activities that do not enable children to experience knowledge construction in a playful and interactive way.
