The objective of this text is to propose self-management as a theoretical foundation for developing an extension methodology for management programs in Brazil. The changes introduced by the guidelines for university extension in Brazilian higher education enable significant restructuring in how extension activities are carried out within these programs. Grounded in the reciprocal relationship between society and the university, this method seeks to leverage university structures to promote and enhance their capacity for social engagement, communication, and intervention. Based on materialist theory, the text argues that self-management serves as a theoretical principle for the development of a method suited to problem analysis, the creation and experimentation of innovative practices, and the strengthening of alternative forms of organizing associated labor. This approach fosters effective interaction among the core pillars of university education teaching, research, and extension in the promotion of self-management.
