The proliferation of discourses on Active Methodologies is an indicator of the complex sociopolitical and cultural issues that permeate learning relationships in contemporary Brazilian higher education. Aiming to contribute to discussions on teaching methods based on student autonomy, this article presents pedagogical practices guided by communication in the teaching of Architectural and Urban Design. It asks: is it possible to transform communication and the transfer of information within educational processes? The proposal is that communication-based learning mediates identified conflicts in teaching relations, turning the sharing and negotiation of meanings into a pedagogical strategy. The article is organized into four sections: a discussion of the contradictions of specialized language; the presentation of the theoretical framework of communication and information science; the contributions of narrative studies to design education; and reflections derived from empirical experiences on researching and sharing knowledge in contemporary contexts.
