Bilingual education for the deaf, legally recognized in Brazil, establishes Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as the first language of deaf communities and mandates its compulsory provision in Basic Education. However, the initial training of deaf teachers – those responsible for teaching Libras –remains precarious, lacking consolidated curricular guidelines. This study aimed to analyze training practices and processes for deaf teachers through the implementation of a continuing education course in two Brazilian states (São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul). The NarVal instrument – Libras Narrative Assessment – was used as a didactic resource, with potential not only to assess the linguistic production of deaf children but also to serve as a formative tool for teachers. The research methodology included an online course, collective interviews, and audiovisual recordings of the sessions. Based on the theories of Vigotski and Bakhtin, the analysis highlighted gaps in the initial training of these teachers, particularly in their mastery of Libras structure and their understanding of its role in students’ linguistic and cognitive development. The use of NarVal helped broaden awareness of the linguistic organization of Libras and fostered reflection on narrative teaching as a formative element. Furthermore, the study revealed the absence of a specific curriculum for teaching Libras, which hinders the progression of learning. The study concludes with a call for the urgent reevaluation of initial teacher education for deaf instructors and the development of a curriculum that respects the visual-gestural nature of Libras, while valuing teaching practices within the context of bilingual education.
