This article aims to contribute to studies and constructions of university policies to prevent student illness in Higher Education. It presents results of a search delimited in three groups: illness factors in academic life, protective factors and actions suggested to the university as a way of preventing this illness. The methodology had quantitative and qualitative dynamics. We used Excel and Iramuteq software to analyze the data. It highlights the teacher category, especially because it has appeared as a relevant factor both as a cause of mental illness and as a protective factor, which, whilst appearing contradictory, points to the multiple facets of the teacher-student relationship in Higher Education. The importance of research on the topic of health and education goes beyond diagnosis and pointing out illness factors, emphasizing protective factors and student’s suggestions, all of them should be considered in the construction of institutional policies for support, care and health promotion.
