Introduction: Despite the urgency in implementing the curricularization of extension in undergraduate courses, practical examples of how to promote it still need to be provided. Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an active teaching methodology that promotes active student participation in addressing real-world problems. Objective: Thus, the goal is to report the experience using PBL as a tool for inserting extension and research into the undergraduate curriculum. Methods: PBL was applied in the Ecology and Evolution discipline of Biomedicine course at the Universidade Federal Fluminense/Nova Friburgo from 2020 to 2023. Conclusions: After its application, we found that PBL allows students to apply their knowledge to concrete projects of social relevance, generating products with a scientific dissemination bias to promote the population's health. Furthermore, PBL proved effective in developing scientific skills and promoting meaningful learning.
