Resumo

O artigo propõe um marco teórico-metodológico interdisciplinar para investigar a transformação do sentido do trabalho na contemporaneidade. Sob uma matriz weberiana, discute-se a capacidade da profissão de conferir sentido ao trabalho via três dimensões: a posição das profissões no mercado laboral, as mudanças nos repertórios da vida profissional e a importância da identidade profissional na integração social e política dos trabalhadores. Essa discussão é sucedida por uma análise da evolução de indicadores macroeconômicos das economias avançadas, examinando mudanças setoriais e seus impactos no volume e tipo de emprego. Mediante revisão bibliográfica e dados recentes, o estudo contribui para uma agenda de pesquisa que conjuga a perspectiva da sociologia das profissões com a análise keynesiana dos agregados econômicos.
