Abstract

Introduction: The four-year CAPES evaluation monitors Brazilian graduate programs and is decisive for their approval and funding. One of the main evaluation items is the program proposal, which describes the goals, mission, and characteristics of each graduate program. This study aims to assess the prevalence of concepts related to responsible research practices in Life Sciences program proposals, as well as the inclusion of scientific training courses in their curricula. Methodology: Using data from the Sucupira Platform, the study analyzed academic graduate program proposals in Biological and Health Sciences submitted to the 2017–2020 CAPES Evaluation. Mentions of concepts such as ethics, peer review, academic productivity, scientific training, and open science practices were quantified. In the same sample, the existence of courses related to basic scientific training—such as scientific methodology, experimental design, and statistics—was also examined. Results: Open science and transparency concepts were infrequently mentioned in the program proposals, contrasting with the frequent emphasis on academic productivity. Although certain programs reasonably offered courses on basic scientific training, these were rarely mandatory. Health Sciences programs showed broader coverage of these topics compared to those in Biological Sciences. Conclusion: The results suggest the need to revise program evaluation criteria to better value research transparency and methodological robustness, as well as to strengthen the inclusion of these themes in curricula. Further studies are necessary to determine whether changes occurred in the most recent evaluation cycle and whether this pattern applies to other areas.
