This article presents the preliminary findings of the research titled “The Challenges of Secondary Education for Youth in Public Schools in the Região Serrana Fluminense,” with a particular focus on the municipality of Petrópolis. The study adopts a qualitative methodology, utilising focus groups with students to explore the main challenges faced by secondary school students in the region’s public schools. The data indicate that, although the implemented educational public policies have positive intentions, there is a significant disconnect between the policies’ proposals and the students’ real needs and expectations. This misalignment contributes to disengagement and, in many cases, school dropout. The findings suggest the need for an integrated educational approach that includes not only curriculum reform but also investment in school infrastructure and the provision of psychological and pedagogical support. These elements are considered essential to promote students’ retention and academic success, highlighting the urgency of more appropriate interventions to meet the youth's demands within the educational context, particularly in the Região Serrana Fluminense.
