Abstract

Ideal types synthesise found patterns in the social world and seek meanings on the core of individual actions to explain a determined phenomenon. Thus, considering the historical-critical pedagogy and overcoming-critical approach, we have built ideal types for analysing teachers’ perspectives of the new approaches to physical education at school. Afterwards, we conducted a questionnaire with physical education teachers using the Survey Monkey app. The analysis permitted us to understand that research participants acknowledged the importance of new approaches to physical education. Therefore, we discussed and concluded that reforming the physical education knowledge field and course curriculum may have influenced teachers’ perspectives on their manner of teaching. We believe that physical education teachers recognize the importance of innovative propositions and incorporate them into their discourse when planning their lessons. When we talk about sports content, it may seem that the teaching method is more traditional. However, the research participants who identified the content in their curriculum views aligned more closely with the ideal type of social critique.
