Abstract

Brazilian children and teenagers are spending more time with cell phones than at school or in leisure time outside of screens. Their presence on the network is permeated by risks, including exposure to inappropriate content, threats to privacy, cyberbullying and manipulation by digital platforms. How can we promote the use of technology to take advantage of its full potential, while taking care of neurological development? The objective of this article is to map the evidence on psychological illness in children and adolescents caused by excessive use of screens amid the disinformation industry. This is an integrative method review of the literature. To do so, we will use two examples: the animation Inside Out 2, from Disney/Pixar studios, which became the highest-grossing film of 2024, after closing its opening weekend with a gross of US$724.4 million, and the use of Brazilian children and teenagers as influencers to sell the game of chance known as “tigrinho game”. Furthermore, the research brings initiatives from Brazilian parents that aim to disconnect their children up to the age of 16; up to 8 years in London and projects with mixed ages in the United States – all inspired by the research of American social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of “The Anxious Generation”. As final considerations, we point out the need for a joint task: parents, MEC, public policies and platform regulation.
