Abstract

The environmental education plays a transcendental role in generating citizens with greater awareness and commitment to caring for the environment. The National System of Environmental Certification for Educational Institutions (SNCAE, in Spanish), implemented in Chile since 1999, to promote the insertion of environmental education in formal education, therefore, it is relevant to know how this certification impacts at the level of knowledge and pro-environmental behavior. In this context, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of environmental certification on knowledge and pro-environmental behavior in middle school students from municipal educational institutions in the Curicó-Chile.

The study was observational and analytical; 7th and 8th grade students from four schools in the commune of Curicó, Chile, participated. The data were obtained through surveys, with which an index of environmental knowledge and an index of pro-environmental behavior were determined, from which a reason was calculated to determine the relationship between environmental knowledge and pro-environmental behavior.

The average environmental knowledge index the student of certified schools was 7.87 versus 7.49 for uncertified schools without environmental certification, while the pro-environmental behavior index was 7.76 and 6.94 respectively, these differences were not statistically significant.

In conclusion there are no differences in knowledge and pro-environmental behavior between 7th and 8th grade students who belong to establishments with and without environmental certification.
