CHARACTERIZATION OF DEATHS BY SUICIDE OF MEMBERS OF THE CIVIL POLICE OF THE FEDERAL DISTRICT

Objective: describe the frequency, annual distribution, age, position held and the main characteristics of suicides among members of the Civil Police of the Federal District that occurred in the geographic space of the Federal District. Methods: descriptive and cross-sectional study that includes all deaths that occurred due to completed suicide in the period from 01/01/2013 to 12/31/2022 among the researched population. The analysis included describing the cases, verifying the distribution of sociodemographic information and calculating the annual mortality rate. Results: 19 deaths caused by suicide were found among all civil police officers in the Federal District, with 17 suicides among male civil police officers (89.47%), with a higher incidence of suicides committed at home (68.42%), by people aged between 33 and 59 years (84.21%), by married individuals (73.69%), who were still in full professional activity (57.89%) and using a firearm as main method (57.89%). Of the suicide cases, the majority were committed by police officers (89.48%). Conclusion: in recent years, high suicide rates have been found among civil police officers in the Federal District, with the need for further studies on the mental health of this occupational group, including as a way of contributing to the adoption of preventive measures that provide reducing the risk of suicide.
