THE "METAVERSE" PHENOMENON AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON EDUCATION: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW AND DOCUMENTAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

The significant growth in the use of smartphones in recent decades has led to a change in how people relate to the internet. Also, in this way, it is expected that what is conventionally called the Metaverse will drastically impact the way society lives and understands technology. For this reason, teachers and educators must understand and take ownership of these technologies while the Metaverse is being built. In order to understand how the immersive tools of the Metaverse have been used, with a particular focus on the educational context, a systematic literature review was conducted using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. In addition, documentary research was performed based on technical reports from companies interested in the Metaverse. It was possible to perceive that researchers and entrepreneurs are still trying to understand the Metaverse and how it could be and that studies, especially in the educational area, are still very embryonic.
