This dossier aims to reposition research perspectives and identities, as well as to strengthen critical reflexivity in Applied Linguistics, more specifically, in the area of Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL). For such, it gathers research papers that – due to their empirical, often exploratory nature and from different angles of knowledge – search for languages of description which allow us to think in a different way about the modes of production of knowledge in multilingual contexts of migrations and mobility. We take as a starting point the experience of speakers crossed by migrations – past or inherited, present and lived, or just desired. Focusing on migrating speakers poses, for the fields of Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics, a profound challenge of an ethical, sociocultural, political, epistemic and methodological nature, whose scope goes beyond this text, but to which we wish to contribute. Punctuated and inspired by the works presented in this dossier, sometimes extrapolating from their spaces of action, we focus on three of the various angles of this challenge: first, that of movement, mobility, migration and the border; second, that of heteroglossia, multilingualism and entanglements with the PAL; and finally, the co-habitation of ontologies and modes of knowledge production.
