The level of educational quality can be investigated through student performance, which in turn is explained by several variables, among them teaching quality. Several studies represent the teaching quality through the pedagogical practices used by teachers in the classroom, which stand out as a precedent of their quality because they represent the exercise of the teaching profession. In view of this, this study aims to verify whether the set of pedagogical practices used by teachers in classrooms are related to the performance of students in the 9th grade of Elementary School and 3rd grade of High School in Portuguese Language and Mathematics in the Basic Education Assessment System (SAEB) in 2017. To this end, initially, three pedagogical practice indices were constructed and, subsequently, econometric estimation was performed through a three-level hierarchical model (student, teacher, and school). The econometric results pointed out that the Pedagogical Practices Index - General showed a positive influence on the students' performance in Portuguese and Mathematics. Thus, it is concluded that the use of pedagogical practices is fundamental for better student performance.
