PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND ELECTORAL PARTICIPATION: A RELATIONSHIP BEYOND THE RIGHT TO VOTE

This text analyzes the scenario referent the 2020 Brazilian elections with regard to the participation of people with disabilities. It uses the Superior Electoral Court database, stratifying the electoral numbers into 04 groups: electorate, candidacies, attendance and electoral success. The results found highlight significant distortions regarding the number of electorate and low representation with regard to the registration of candidacies and electoral success of people with disabilities. It ends by pointing out that the occupation of elective posts has a catalytic effect on the creation and expansion of public policies that promote accessibility, increase social rights and effectively improve the lives of people with disabilities. This is an empirical study that adds contributions to the literature on political representation, political inclusion of minorities, and social studies that already analyze the representation biases of gender and race the relevant, and still little debated, theme related to people with disabilities.
