THE INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE AND TEACHER TRAINING ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN THE FIELD OF NATURAL SCIENCES

This study investigates the performance of students from Brazilian state public schools in the area of Natural Sciences , in the 2017 ENEM. Student performance was compared between different types of schools and between urban and rural schools and evaluated the factors that may cause these differences. The influence of school infrastructure, proportion of teachers trained in the area of Natural Sciences and teacher qualification on student performance was evaluated. Student performance varied with the type of school attended and between rural and urban schools. Among the factors evaluated, school infrastructure was the most important factor in student performance, followed by the proportion of teachers working in their respective areas of training and the qualification of teachers.
