Abstract

Objectives: This study analyzes the academic debate on Social Innovation Ecosystems (SIEs) by identifying primary theoretical approaches, epistemes, progress, and gaps to formulate propositions to put forward the field’s research agenda. Theoretical Approach: Beyond a bibliometric and descriptive thematic review, this article conducts a critical examination of the epistemological foundations in the debate. It proposes a research agenda anchored in Global South perspectives, specifically focusing on Latin America, to decolonize and expand theorization based on regional specificities. Method: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The documentary corpus underwent bibliometric, theoretical, and epistemological analyses, which served as the foundation for the developed recommendations. Results: A bibliometric and longitudinal analysis of 267 articles (with high and moderate adherence to SIE) provided a macro overview of the field. Subsequently, an in-depth qualitative examination of the 19 high-adherence articles revealed the primary conceptualizations, frameworks, and methodologies employed, highlighting dominant analytical currents and their respective epistemological anchors. Conclusions: This study offers an original contribution by advancing the research agenda on SIE in both national and international contexts. By transcending thematic analysis, the article fosters new theorizations that consider diverse “ecologies of ecosystems” and geographic specificities, emphasizing the potential of research produced in the Global South and Latin America to advance the contemporary debate.
