Distance education in Mozambique: student profile in the educational organization and management program

Abstract

Distance Education (DE) has become an important strategy for expanding access to higher education in Mozambique, particularly given persistent regional inequalities and the difficulties associated with in-person study. However, the implementation of this modality still faces challenges related to technological infrastructure, pedagogical coordination, and student retention. This article analyzed the profile of Distance Education students and their views on the implementation of the Bachelor's degree program in Educational Organization and Management at the Faculty of Education of Eduardo Mondlane University, aiming to strengthen the management of this modality. To this end, a descriptive-quantitative study was conducted, applying an online questionnaire to 279 students selected from a population of 919 students enrolled in the program in 2023. The results indicate that access to emerging technologies and the provision of scholarships, among other factors, are crucial elements in mitigating students' socioeconomic vulnerability. The persistence of regional and gender inequalities in access to this modality was also identified. Therefore, addressing these issues is essential for a Faculty that seeks to establish itself nationally, regionally, and internationally.
