This study investigates the expansion of school groups into the interior of Paraíba between 1926 and 1930, focusing on the Gama e Melo School Group in Princesa Isabel, the first school group established in the Sertão region. The research draws on primary and secondary sources, including presidential messages, decrees, reports, newspapers, and studies on the history of education and politics in Paraíba. Based on Pinheiro (2002), Souza (1998), and Lewin (1993), the study examines the criteria that guided the selection of municipalities, considering educational, demographic, and political factors. The findings indicate that the expansion of school groups was not determined solely by educational needs or demographic criteria. Rather, it was also influenced by power relations between municipalities, local political elites, and the state government, revealing the intersection between educational modernization and political networks in Paraíba.
