Abstract

This article examines how Brazilian master's theses and doctoral dissertations (2015–2025) address the teaching of mathematics in preschool from the perspective of the Teaching Guiding Activity (Atividade Orientadora de Ensino, AOE) and the implications they reveal for the development of mathematical thinking. This study examines the academic production of the GEPAPe em Rede research network through a search of its repository, study selection guided by a PRISMA-adapted flow diagram, and content analysis. This repository was selected because it brings together the leading Brazilian body of research on the AOE. Six studies were analyzed through the categories of logical-historical movement, conceptual nexuses, and role-play. The findings indicate that teaching organized according to the AOE framework, articulated with role-play as the leading activity of the preschool child, reveals a recurring pedagogical structure composed of five stages: introduction of the role-play, role assumption, object manipulation, collective reflection, and documentation. It is concluded that this structure, grounded in the guiding dimension of teaching (needs, motives, and objectives), emerges during the development of Learning Triggering Situations (Situações Desencadeadoras de Aprendizagem, SDA), which are proposed as a means of fostering the initial development of theoretical mathematical thinking in preschool without promoting the schoolification of childhood, while preserving childhood as a unique stage of human development.
