Primary and secondary education during the imperial period: the loom of schooling for the naive

Abstract

Expanding the Educational System is a way to address the needs of the less financially well-off social class; however, during the Imperial Period, this right was denied to them. Regarding education during this period, it marked the end of an educational model aimed at instructing society in the faith. In this context, this article aims to explore how the main levels of education—in this case, primary and secondary education were made available to students during this historical moment in Brazil. To achieve this objective, the research employs a methodology based on a diverse body of literature, focusing on readings about these first two phases of the organization of formal education in Brazil. Addressing this topic is relevant because it highlights how the educational process is an essential tool for the formation of a nation. The results revealed, after analyzing the information, how education functioned during the Imperial Period and also identified a deficiency in the education of that era that needed to be addressed.
