Biotechnology and Scientific Education in Paraguay: Toward a Knowledge Economy?

Introduction: Science education in Paraguay faces significant challenges shaped by territorial and socioeconomic inequalities. According to data from the Ministry of Education and Sciences (2025), most students are enrolled in primary and secondary education (grades 1 to 9), with a substantial proportion attending schools in rural areas, where access to educational and scientific opportunities remains limited. Objective: To examine the Paraguayan educational landscape in relation to biotechnology education, emphasizing its potential contribution to social and economic development and the need for strengthened educational strategies. Discussion: Biotechnology has emerged as a strategic field with considerable potential to address social, economic, and environmental challenges. However, in Paraguay, access to comprehensive educational resources remains limited, and opportunities for hands-on learning are scarce. These constraints hinder the development of scientific skills and competencies among students, reducing their ability to engage with contemporary scientific and technological issues. Conclusion: Integrating biotechnology into the educational system requires a multidimensional approach that addresses both pedagogical and social factors. Strengthening scientific literacy is essential not only for academic development but also for fostering informed and critical citizen participation in decision-making processes related to sustainable development.
