The purpose of this article is to understand how enslavement and its abolition without reparations produced inequalities that still influence the place occupied by black people on the Brazilian labor market. To this end, a historical review of the national black enslavement was made, with a survey of researches about the post-abolition scenario and an analysis of secondary data from research carried out by DIEESE, Instituto Ethos and IBGE, between 1999 and 2020 - which portrays the reality of black people in the contemporary job market. Based on this survey, we noticed a significant gap in the national research regarding the situation of black people in the first years after slavery abolition. In conclusion, we discuss how today's Brazilian labor market reproduces structures historically built in the colonial and post-abolition periods.
