Residential Electric Vanguard in Latin America: the Pioneer Installation of Palacio Cousino (1882–1883)

This article analyzes the installation of the Edison incandescent lighting system in the Palacio Cousino of Santiago (1882–1883) as a case of pioneering residential electrical technology transfer in Latin America. Through a qualitative historical-documentary research design based on the triangulation of primary sources—the Thomas A. Edison Papers archive (Rutgers University), corporate bulletins from the Edison Electric Light Co., contemporary European technical press, and unpublished documentation from the National Library of Chile—it is demonstrated that the palace's plant operated with four type-Z dynamos, up to 320 incandescent lamps, and more than 2,000 feet of underground conductors. Furthermore, its operation was recorded by Edison's own local agency prior to, and with three times more lighting capacity than, the Echaurren residence (1885), traditionally reputed as the first electrified home in Chile.
The results place Santiago at the regional vanguard of the domestic adoption of the Edison system—in chronological parity with London, Milan, and New York—and document the socio-technological frictions with the Compañía de Consumidores de Gas de Santiago, the country's first urban energy monopoly. Finally, this study corrects two persistent historiographical attributions: the alleged French nature of the plant and the primacy of the Echaurren ball as a foundational milestone.
