Rice production is one of Uruguay’s main export sectors and is characterised by a high level of technological development. However, research related to the health of workers is limited. This situation is shared by other countries in the region. The aim of this study is to
analyse agrochemical poisoning and workplace accidents in the rural phase of rice production. An observational study was conducted, using data from public repositories from 2002 to 2022, in the central-eastern region of Uruguay. It was observed that both events increased in relation to production rates and among young people. The surveillance of these processes has limitations similar to those in other primary producing countries. The case of Uruguay highlights the need to democratise knowledge as away of reducing historical inequalities.
