Health literacy of caregivers of people with rare genetic diseases: associations with sociodemographic profile.
Abstract: This pioneering study aimed to evaluate the potential and limitations of health literacy among caregivers of people with rare genetic diseases in relation to sociodemographic factors. It was an observational, cross-sectional, analytical study with a quantitative approach, guided by the STROBE methodology, conducted with caregivers of people with rare genetic diseases at the only Reference Service for Rare Genetic Diseases accredited by the Ministry of Health in northern Brazil. Two instruments were used: the first was a questionnaire with structured questions related to the caregiver's sociodemographic profile, and the second was the multidimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire validated in Brazilian Portuguese. Analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0, with descriptive and inferential statistics, and non-parametric Mann-Whitney tests. The greatest potential was identified in the "Understanding health information and knowing what to do" scale, while the greatest limitation was found in "Sufficient information to take care of health." It is necessary to recognize health literacy as a modifiable social determinant of health, in order to approach the challenges faced by someone caring for another person cautiously.
