This article aims to present the theoretical models for understanding disability available in the literature. From a theoretical and methodological perspective, this study relied on a search for international and national sources addressing the topic, through exploratory and bibliographical research. As a result, new theoretical models for understanding disability were identified, analyzed in light of related research. These models portray current historical and social moments, but they intertwine with current societal indicators, potentially reflecting the understanding of disability and the process of educational and social inclusion. As a consequence, we argue that theoretical models should be addressed in teacher training at all levels to broaden the discussion on the importance of awakening and consolidating attitudinal accessibility.
