The essay discusses the book A Revolução Burguesa no Brasil on its fiftieth anniversary. It argues in favor of Florestan Fernandes' book's status as a classic, and more than that for the topicality of his thesis on bourgeois autocracy. A brief comparison with Raymundo Faoro's Os donos do poder seeks to clarify the adverse reception conditions of Florestan's book in the context of the democratic transition that was taking place at the time.
