The aim of this article is to analyze the discourses produced in the scientific field in relation to the process of assessing and classifying disabilities. As a methodological strategy, an exploratory approach was adopted with the aim of accessing the discursive field in which this issue is inserted. To this end, a bibliographic survey was carried out on the Capes Periodicals Portal database, including articles on the subject, based on the choice of some descriptors. With a total of 11 articles selected, the analyses carried out on the empirical material show that the process of assessing and classifying disabilities comprises the production of two discursive axes: I) the activation of the process of medicalization of life as a biopolitical strategy; II) the movement of resistance to the insurgencies of this process. Based on the reference produced by the manuals that assess and classify disabilities, such as the DSM and ICD, aligned with the medical/biomedical model of disability, and the ICF and IFBr-M, aligned with the biopsychosocial model of disability, it was shown that these manuals act as instruments that capture the subjectivity of individuals, producing actions that assess and classify human existence.
