This article aims to conduct an international historical-comparative analysis between the traditional Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and the PhDP (PhD by publications), proposing a framework of analytical dimensions and comparative parameters to guide the design, evaluation, and communication of these doctoral formats. The methodology involved a bibliographic and documentary review with a historical-comparative approach. The results show that the proposed framework enables a more accurate understanding of the complementarities and differences between both models, reinforcing the need for explicit regulatory guidelines in Brazil for the potential adoption of the PhDP within the scope of graduate education policies.
