RESISTANCE PRACTICES AND TERRITORIALITIES: THE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN THE CARLOS MARIGHELLA OCCUPATION AND THE POPULAR SCHOOL

Abstract

This article analyzes the three phases of the Carlos Marighella Occupation, located in Palhoça (SC), highlighting the conflicts and resistances from the initial occupation of an abandoned lot to the eviction considered illegal. After the families were relocated to a sports gymnasium in another neighborhood, a place perceived as unwelcoming, the residents organized assemblies to decide the community’s future. This process led to the formation of a new occupation in a different neighborhood of the municipality, where the families remain to this day. The research examines the contentious relationship with the city government, collective mobilization strategies, and the use of social media to give voice to the families, in partnership with the university community. Additionally, it problematizes the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program by discussing its applications in the municipality and its consequences based on coordinators’ testimonies, revealing the complexities of the social struggle for housing and the right to the city. Next, the article addresses the collective process of building a popular school within the occupation, grounded in the concepts of Historical-Critical Pedagogy. Since the occupation’s foundation in 2022, educational projects aimed at adult residents have been developed collaboratively by coordinators, educators, and residents. Based on bibliographic review and semi-structured interviews, the research revealed the pedagogical perspectives of popular educators, ongoing projects, and residents’ perceptions of these activities. These initiatives go beyond formal education, functioning as spaces for exchanging experiences and strengthening the community, expanding the possibility of social transformation beyond conventional learning.
