This article presents the social relations and contradictions within early nineteenth-century society in Rio de Janeiro as incorporated in Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias, by Manuel Antônio de Almeida (2018 [1852-53]). For this purpose, investigates the figure of the malandro in Brazilian historiography, the relationship between social processes and literary form in the novel and the dialectic of order and disorder as a structural principle that sustains the lives of free and poor individuals in João VI's Rio de Janeiro, who were part of the slave-based mode of production.
