Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Teaching first aid (FA) in Physical Education courses is of great importance for preparing future professionals to handle emergencies. However, studies indicate that despite its significance, this training often receives little attention, exposing practitioners to safety risks. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether an educational intervention in first aid improves the knowledge of future Physical Education professionals. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, non-randomized study was conducted with pre- and post-intervention assessments, using a single group from January to June 2024. The practices involved students who participated in theoretical and practical FA activities, followed by pre- and post-training assessments to test their knowledge. RESULTS: A significant increase in correct responses was observed in topics such as Airway Obstruction due to Foreign Body (AOFB) in children under 1 year old (from 36% to 84%, p=0.00) and fainting (from 64% to 92%, p=0.01), indicating that the intervention was particularly effective in these areas. However, more complex topics such as CPR and the use of AED showed less remarkable results. CONCLUSION: First aid education not only qualifies future Physical Education professionals but also directly impacts society by preparing individuals who will act in environments where quick and efficient intervention can save lives. Therefore, it is essential for educational institutions to review their curricula to ensure that all graduates possess the necessary skills to act safely and confidently in emergency situations.
