The instrumental Iberism in the Estado Novo: On Oliveira Vianna's utopian corporatism, statist conservatism and Christian democracy

This article investigates the theory and practice of corporatism from Mihal Manoïlesco at the beginning of the 20th century and the discussion it generated in Western Political Science and its reception in Brazil. Thus, to understand how the authoritarian regime of the Estado Novo, influenced by Oliveira Vianna and his vision of statist conservatism, or instrumental authoritarianism, established corporatist practices in a country out of step with the Anglo-Saxon countries. To analyse how corporatism was used from an Iberian perspective and the originality of its support in disassociating itself from totalitarian regimes through Christian democracy. Finally, to situate the stage Brazil is at in relation to the corporative continuities of national associationism.
