Abstract

This article invites us to explore the development of the reading world from the perspective of digital literacy in the 21st century. With the advent of the internet and the dissemination of (false) information on a massive scale, the Academy’s focus on the development of critical thinking within schools has become increasingly necessary. In this way, we share our reflections in order to close the gap between the concept of lateral reading, a contextualized reading method for the current moment, and the Brazilian Basic Education curriculum. To that end, we explore a lesson designed for eighth and ninth-grade students at a public school in João Pessoa (Paraíba, Brazil). Our goal is to open a space for discussion so that all teachers have the opportunity to analyze both the proposal and the theory behind it closely, in order to find ways to incorporate this new reading technique into their pedagogical repertoire.
