Nowadays, due to the social and learning context, it takes more than the objective knowledge of the subjects, on the part of teachers. New skills related to communication and leadership are required. The objective of this research was to develop an instrument to evaluate the profile in relation to the leadership of the teaching staff of a Veterinary Medicine course, at an University in the state of São Paulo. A structured questionnaire was applied, composed of 5 domains to assess leadership skills. The construct was considered reliable and made it possible to evaluate the characteristics and leadership skills that prevailed in the faculty members, as well as other aspects that should be emphasized. The greatest deficiencies found refer to the domains related to the relationship with students, the teaching-learning process and the encouragement of humanistic skills. On the other hand, two domains that reveal the teachers' concern in setting a good example to be followed, and skills in stimulating and motivating students were the strong points. The results allow the conclusion that the instrument corresponds an important tool to be used to identify the leadership of teachers and represents an initial strategy for the Teacher Professional Development program.
