This article is part of the doctoral thesis completed in the Postgraduate Program in Education, at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PPEGEdu/UNIRIO). The research was funded by Capes, during interuniversity exchange doctorate, which was carried out at the University of Coruña (UDC), in A Coruña/Galicia/Spain. FAPERJ also contributed to the financing of the studies, when they were carried out at the Office of Research in Curriculum Development (which operates at PPEGEdu/UNIRIO). The research was carried out in the public education network of the municipality of São Gonçalo and proposed the analysis of textbooks in Portuguese, used in most schools in the network of São Gonçalo. The main objective was to identify and understand conflicts and convergences between the logic of social relations represented in the books analyzed and the social reality of the municipality. Regarding the methodology, we highlight that it was a qualitative and documentary study that, through historical-dialectical materialism, sought to interpret categories such as exclusion through invisibility and distortion of reality. From the considerations we formulate, we highlight the finding that schools, through textbooks, can reproduce social understandings that reinforce different marks that promote exclusion and, in the case of the present work, the reproduction of racism.
