The 2022 election marked a significant milestone not only in the Brazilian electoral contest but also for the very survival of democracy, as one of the political groups in the race was characterized by anti-democratic stances. Even with the defeat in the election, the far-right candidate, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), achieved a substantial vote count, totaling 58 million votes. To understand this electoral phenomenon, the guiding research question of the study can be framed as follows: which values had the most influence on votes for Bolsonaro? Using 2022 ESEB data and logistic regressions, we found that the main determinants were anti-PT sentiment, self-identified ideological positioning, and a favorable stance toward a potential coup. This research contributes to the literature by confirming the right-wing and authoritarian profile of the group, and demonstrating that leaders capable of encapsulating such values and behaviors can once again secure the support of a significant portion of the Brazilian population.
