Historically, cinema in Brazil was (and still is) conceived and produced by the socially hegemonic group in our country: white, middle-class men. Even so, in recent years, we have observed the growth of the presence of black people in spaces where meanings and audiovisual narratives are produced, that is, as film directors and/or screenwriters, a space of hierarchical power in the audiovisual field. This article aims to present the trajectory and thinking of one of these black filmmakers, Yasmin Thayná. The corpus is formed by texts and interviews available on the internet and a semi-structured interview conducted with the filmmaker. It is concluded that the filmmaker understands the field of cinema and audiovisual as a tool for the struggle for self-representation and self-definition for the black population. Finally, because of this analysis, it is possible to infer that audiovisual, in the current technological context, can be used as an instrument to combat the images of control theorized by the black intellectual Patrícia Hill Collins and to redefine black existence in Brazil.
