Artificial Intelligence applied to Perfumery and study perspectives in the field of Information Science

Abstract

In recent years, perfumery companies have created technological solutions based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) aiming, among other purposes, to optimize the fragrance creation process. It is observed that Information Science (IS), as an interdisciplinary field, can contribute to the application of AI in Perfumery, as well as investigating other aspects related to the scientific field itself in this context. This article aims to present the contributions of AI to Perfumery and identify study perspectives for IS. For this, bibliographical research was carried out on the CAPES Periodicals Portal and, due to the scarcity of scientific literature regarding the themes when combined, news websites or others considered important were also used based on a Google search, as well as the websites of perfumery companies. The results reveal the following contributions of AI to this sector: optimization, trend analysis and data-driven insights; fragrance customization; sustainability and preservation of aromas; reproduction of fragrances; education; immersive and interactive experience, and virtual reality; visual design and marketing; and translating aromas into emotions, colors and words. The following possibilities were identified as research perspectives in IS: epistemological and theoretical investigation of olfactory information; investigation into metadata specific to the field of Perfumery; study of classifications of olfactory families and descriptions of olfactory notes and their terminology; development of controlled vocabularies, thesauri and specific ontologies for the field of Perfumery; management of data generated by AI-based solutions; studies and applications of Information Architecture, Information Findability and Serendipity; investigation of olfactory studies from the perspective of olfactory memory; and reflection on the creation of initiatives to disseminate perfume culture in informational environments.
