This article assesses the potential and limits of translingualism as a theoretical framework applied to the analysis of scholarly communications. A theoretical revision of the “trans turn” in sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and language teaching pedagogies is carried out. The characteristics of communicative exchanges in the scientific field at a local, regional and international level are considered. Finally, both the richness and shortcomings of this paradigm as a methodological and theoretical toolbox are discussed in relation to this particular object of study, included its potential in terms of linguistic policy design towards greater inclusion and democratization of the conditions of production, circulation, and reception of scientific knowledge within this field of social space.
