The article presents the results of a theoretical-bibliographical research based on the problem of the social content of preschool play, focusing on the relations between form and content of the playful activity carried out in the maximum work of D. B. Elkonin, "Psychology of Play". Starting from the observation that contemporary Brazilian researches that assume the historical-cultural perspective have thematized only secondarily the dimension of the content of the social roles played by children, and considering the premise that the performed play is an activity that provides the reconstitution of social relations by the mechanism of playful action, the study investigated the treatment given by the author to the problematic of the content of play and its relationship with the playful form. The analysis of the work was structured based on four axes: i) Historical context and project of society; ii) method of knowledge of reality; iii) conception of human formation (individual-society relationship); and iv) pedagogical praxis. It was possible to identify that the dimensions of the form and content of play are conceived as dialectical unity, and that the principle of content-form unit crosses the analyzed work integrally, bringing centrality to the content in Elkonin's general theory of the play, a fact that has important implications for scientific research and for school educational work.
