This paper reconstructs Raymundo Faoro’s reflections in the final years of brazilian’s dictatorship from 1964. In it, sources as works, scientific papers, opinion columns and interviews given by the author between 1977 and 2002 will be utilized. The study points to, on one hand, a negative vision by Faoro about the process of democractic transition, read as a conservative rearrangement of elits; in this moment, the centrality of the concepts of patrimonialism and burocractic state it’s evident in the intelectual’s interpretation. On the other hand, Faoro’s texts and pronouncements show a substantive concept of democracy and reveal the influence of classical republicanism themes in the author’s political thought.
