This article shows an approach to scientific education designed to help innovate the teaching of Portuguese as a mother tongue based on investigative practices in basic schools. The proposal was built collaboratively by elementary school teachers and higher education professors, members of a research project linked to a Brazilian government program designed to strengthen students’ scientific education. It configures (a) bibliographical research dedicated to the characterization of the mentioned approach (LAUGKSCH, 1999; SILVA, 2020a; SOARES, 2003a), and (b) documentary analysis of the focus of scientific education in a national curriculum guideline (BRASIL, 2018) and written impressions about the referred project, shared by teachers in continuing education. This is a study situated in the antidisciplinary field of applied linguistic studies. The pedagogical proposal materialized in the production of some instruments that mediate student learning, among which stand out a didactic unit, a pedagogical planning circuit informed by the scientific education approach and a virtual grammar study laboratory.
