Loneliness, Social Support and Cognitive Reserve of Elderly in the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected de quality of life of the Brazilian elderly population. This study aimed to investigate de relation between loneliness, social support and cognitive reserve of elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted, using a online questionnaire containing the following instruments: CRIq, UCLA Loneliness Scale Revised e MOS-SSS. The final sample was consisted of 116 brazilian elderly. The results showed a correlation between loneliness and social support, but these variables were not associated with cognitive reserve. The regression models demonstrate the influence of perceived health and different forms of social contact, in predicting social support and loneliness. These results evidence the importance of the evaluation of factor related to the quality of life of Brazilian elderly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as proposing effective strategies for the care and well-being of this population.
