In 2017, the rector of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) created a Working Group to prepare the Institutional Security Policy (PSI). It was an initiative of the UFPE process office and, as a representative of the administrative unit responsible for university security, I was faced with the challenge of presenting the first draft of the PSI, considering the specifics of university governance. In this essay, I report the trajectory of this elaboration, from the research of how other Universities acted, which areas of knowledge had relevant contributions and how I myself needed to reframe social representations to apprehend the need to share a priori divergent principles; but, in the end, complementary: the defense of institutional interests and the protection of the academic community
