Objective: To analyze the notion of self-care and actions taken by female sex workers in coping with and preventing COVID-19. Method: Descriptive, qualitative study, supported by the theory of Self-Care Nursing. An in-depth interview was conducted with 30 female sex workers, from Alto Sertão Produtivo Baiano, between the months of September and October 2020. The responses were subjected to a semantic/lexical content analysis made possible by the IRAMUTEQ software. Results: Four thematic classes were revealed that revealed how they understand self-care and implement it in their daily lives: self-care as a means of having well-being and quality of life; valuing money as a means of self-care; the attempt to proceed with the prevention of COVID, although it is difficult for many; consideration that care involves care for others. Conclusion: For the participants, self-care involves taking care of oneself for the prevention of COVID-19 and taking care of others (family members or co-workers). However, the money obtained through sexual service, constitutes a facilitator for the adoption of self-care, since there is the State's negligence in meeting the demands and needs of this vulnerable social group.
